Automated Fulfillment System for 3PL

September of 2000 marked the ‘go live’ of a unique high speed kitting module for Bertelsmann Services Inc. of Valencia California. The system came in on time and in budget with full design load being met the very first day of production! The system was designed specifically for the creation of ‘print on demand’ Welcome Kits for a major software company. As many as 50+ variations are required from a part number population of only 22 items.

 The physical system is comprised of: 

• Ergonomic Workstation custom configured with BOSCH system components, Integral progressive assembly belt conveyor by Dorner built into BOSCH frame. 
   

• High speed omni-directional scanner by Symbol. 
   

• 30 position Pick to Light with large LED position indicators and task complete verification tied to application software. 
   

• Laser printer. 
   

• Wallet Card printer. 
   

• Address Label printer. 
   

• Hot Glue Machine for sealing Welcome Kits
   

The system was approved and inspected by the customer within 4 weeks of final software design and approval cycles.  This is attributed to our emphasis on engineering disciplines and careful attention to project management. Concurrent engineering practices allowed the delivery of the physical system to coincide with delivery of the software. The software having been developed in a Rapid Application Development (RAD) allowed for an expeditious implementation, and no one element fell on the critical path of the project.
 

During the system inspection, Joseph Wilson of Bertelsmann reported: 

"Our customer was thrilled with the Pick to Light and the way the whole system worked. We had no glitches and they appreciated the efforts in accommodating all their requests. They were surprised that the system was more automated than they've seen at other vendors." 

 A bang-up job by all participants and fine example of how vendor / client partnerships are trending in the new millennia. 
Current plans are to expand the system and provide more capacity for the worldwide distribution of these kits. More stories to come about the new software architecture being developed to accommodate multiples lines through the use of Application Servers.
