As we find more and more value added processes "pushed" out to the Distribution environment (postponed final assembly, etc.), very specific automation / information systems need to be integrated with the overall processes. Recent trends in order fulfillment technology that provide labor savings and maintain quality standards complicate this word even further.

Integration to the machine control level (PLCs, Industrial Controllers, etc.) provide a new set of challenges to the WMS integrators. Often the tasks of coordinating the operation of specialty equipment and automated computer assisted picking methods are best handled an additional layer of control refereed here to as Warehouse Control. Although the preference is for a single vendor solution, the specific requirements of a particular application will often call for the flexibility and economies of such specialty modules.

Very often the success of an project is dependent on the functionality provide at this operational level. The closer the information system couples with the physical movement of the material, the more critical its nature becomes.
